Producers Sustainability Survey - 2021 Report
I worked with a client to design, lead, carry out, analyze and report the first Producers Sustainability Survey to get a read on where film producing is today, who makes up the community, and more. The heart of this survey: Is film producing a sustainable career, as it exists today? We asked 75 questions in five categories. I created and designed the report based on the data we collected from nearly 500 respondents.
Is Film Producing a Sustainable Career?
After carrying out primary research with the client, Dear Producer, I wrote a blog post and news release for them to use. This link is to the blog post.
Perhaps Hollywood itself is to blame.
The image of a producer being photographed on the red carpet, schmoozing with celebrities and sitting behind a big desk in a fancy office, is a persistent one. Yet, the reality for most producers falls far from that image. Dear Producer’s new survey provides a realistic look into what film producing is today — and why the producer as an essential part of filmmaking needs to be heard.
How Smart Is My Cat? Cat Intelligence And How We Measure It
Looking at the top cat intelligence research categories, how does your cat measure up?
While you watch your cat attempt the “If I fits, I sits” approach to settling into a box that is far too small, your first thought might not be: my furry genius! However, cats are clearly clever. They’ve figured out how to get into our homes and hearts, how to run the internet, and, well — if you’re reading this, how to get us to think about them even when they’re not demanding anything from us.
8 Common Cat Noises & What They Really Mean
Did your cat just let out an exasperated sigh? Does it sound like your kitty is scolding you for missing food time by five minutes? Or did your feline friend grace your arrival home with a happy little trill and meow?
Cats are constantly communicating with us — as well as the world around them. But what exactly are they saying?
From chirping and purring to night howls and yowls, cats make an array of sounds. Some of them might be specific to your cat. Yet, in general, animal behavior experts
Keep Up with Technology to Make Your Small Business More Successful in 2019
Staying on top of new tools and technologies — and new ways people are using those technologies — can quickly become all-consuming as a business owner. You know it’s important. In fact, a recent Forbes article attributes the downfall of many independent and small businesses to a lack of technology tool adoption. But where do you even begin? When “technology” can mean anything from creating a website to figuring out when and how to adopt artificial intelligence on your website, how do you prio...

No One Likes a Mean Girl but We’ll Still Watch Her: Making a Place for Dark Triad Characters
Let’s say you’re driving along, minding your business, and that inevitable asshole is zooming in and out of traffic and they cut you off. How great is it when all the stars align and you see them pulled over down the road? Perhaps this is partly why we like to watch dark and morally ambiguous characters in movies and shows — the comeuppance is too delicious to pass up. Or maybe it’s the shadow fantasy aspect; they say and do the things we wish we could.
Whatever the reasoning, one thing is becoming clear: when it’s a female character doing these things, we find her “troublesome”...

An Economy of Scales: A Look at the Food Fish Industry in Michigan
Looking at food fish and the Michigan economy. I wrote and edited all copy.
The histories of the fish and people in the Great Lakes have been so intertwined that it is not possible to look at the progression of one without considering the other.
The people here have depended on the Great Lakes for the most essential of resources like drinking water and food fish since the region was settled first by Native Americans and later Europeans. While we are less dependent on the fishery now than ever before, many in Michigan think it may be the key to the state’s future.

Charting New Media on a Vulnerability Spectrum
Simply stated: In all communication we experience a level of personal risk. On one end of that spectrum is vulnerability; the other is safety. The horizontal axis shows the spectrum of control in interaction, operationalized as clean on one end and messy on the other.
